Celebrating the Opening of Nkasa Plains Camp

Celebrating the opening of Nkasa Plains Camp

On 4 July, we officially opened the doors of Nkasa Plains Camp — and we could not have wished for a more meaningful way to begin this chapter. Around three hundred guests from the Dzoti community joined us for the celebration, among them Chief Shufu and the elders of the region, whose presence gave the day its true weight and warmth.

It was a day of traditional dance, of speeches, of shared food and laughter — and above all, a day that reminded us what this camp is really about: a partnership with the people who call this remarkable corner of the Zambezi Region home.

A day to remember

An afternoon with the Dzoti community

From the early afternoon, guests began arriving from across the region — and by the time the celebrations were in full swing, close to three hundred people had gathered at the camp. It was a privilege to welcome Chief Shufu and the elders of the region, whose blessing of the camp meant a great deal to everyone involved.

Traditional dance groups performed throughout the afternoon, filling the camp with music, rhythm and colour. There were speeches — words of welcome, of history, and of hope for what this partnership will bring — and, as any good celebration demands, plenty of food shared among friends old and new.

Why this day matters

Nkasa Plains Camp stands on an exclusive area bordering the Nkasa Rupara National Park, in an area that is home to the Dzoti community. A camp like this only works — and only deserves to work — when it is built on genuine partnership with the people of the land. Tourism in the Zambezi Region can create employment, support local livelihoods and give communities a direct stake in protecting the wilderness around them. The opening celebration was not a formality: it was the foundation of that relationship, and we are grateful for the warmth with which the community has welcomed this project.

Looking ahead

With the celebrations behind us, the camp now turns to what it was built for: welcoming guests to one of Namibia’s wildest and least-visited corners. Sixteen spacious elevated tents, a pool overlooking the plains, and the wetlands of Nkasa Rupara on the doorstep — with game drives, night drives and guided walks led by people who know this land better than anyone.

To Chief Shufu, the elders, and every member of the Dzoti community who joined us on 4 July: thank you. This camp belongs to a shared story, and it began beautifully.
