MOKORO

Gliding through the Okavango Delta’s waterways in a mokoro—a traditional dugout canoe—is the ultimate way to experience its serene beauty. As your skilled guide gently propels the craft through reed-lined channels, you’ll feel completely immersed in this untouched wilderness.

Once carved from solid tree trunks, today’s mokoros are crafted from eco-friendly fiberglass, preserving both tradition and the environment. Carrying one or two passengers, the boat is expertly steered by a Poler, who stands at the stern, using a ngashi (long pole) to navigate with remarkable speed and grace.

This dreamlike journey can be part of your houseboat adventure or included in a camping excursion.

Embarking on a journey with Ngwesi Houseboat offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the Okavango Delta’s pristine beauty, combining adventure with the comforts of home.

Where is the Ngwesi Houseboat located?

Ngwesi is based near the village of Seronga in the Okavango Panhandle – a quieter, more remote part of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It’s an ideal base for water-based safaris and birdwatching.

How do I get to the houseboat?

You can reach Ngwesi by road from Maun to Sepupa, followed by a boat or 4×4 transfer to Seronga. Charter flights to Seronga Airstrip are also available for faster, scenic access.

What is the accommodation like?

Ngwesi sleeps up to 16 guests in 8 en-suite cabins on the lower deck – 4 double and 4 twin. Each cabin has its own bathroom with hot water and a flush toilet. The upper deck includes a dining area, lounge, and bar with panoramic river views.

What wildlife experiences can I expect?

The Okavango Panhandle is teeming with birdlife, hippos, crocs, and aquatic wildlife. While big game is less common here than in Moremi or Khwai, the setting is peaceful, wild, and incredibly rich in biodiversity.

What activities are included?

Your stay includes mokoro excursions through quiet Delta channels, guided birdwatching trips, catch-and-release tiger fishing, and visits to nearby villages for a glimpse into local life.

Is fishing available?

Yes – Ngwesi is one of the best spots in Botswana for tiger fishing (catch-and-release), as well as bream and catfish. All basic fishing gear is provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Is the houseboat suitable for families or groups?

Yes – the Ngwesi is perfect for private groups or multi-generational families. It can also be booked exclusively for special occasions or peaceful retreats.

What is included in the stay?

Your rate includes all meals, non-alcoholic drinks, guided activities, and accommodation. Alcoholic beverages are available at the onboard bar at an extra cost.

Will I have internet or phone signal?

Ngwesi is designed for digital detox. There is limited cell reception in the area and no Wi-Fi onboard. We recommend letting friends know you’re off-grid and embracing the unplugged safari rhythm.

What should I pack?

Bring lightweight clothes in neutral tones, swimwear, a wide-brimmed hat, sunblock, insect repellent, binoculars, and a warm layer for evenings. And don’t forget your camera – sunrises and sunsets on the water are magic.

How do I book?

To reserve your journey on Ngwesi Houseboat, contact us at res@obona-lodges.com or call +267 73 894 155. Early booking is recommended, especially during peak birding and fishing months.
