Best Time to Visit Botswana: A Month-by-Month Guide

BOTSWANA

When to go – and why it matters

Botswana is one of the few destinations on earth where every single month offers something extraordinary. But timing is everything – the difference between a great safari and a once-in-a-lifetime one often comes down to when you go.

Why Timing Matters in Botswana

Botswana’s magic is inseparable from its rhythms. The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, transforms dramatically with the seasons – flooding during the dry winter months, shrinking back in summer. Wildlife concentrations, water levels, temperatures, and even the light itself shift month by month. Understanding these changes means the difference between seeing a handful of animals near a waterhole and witnessing one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

Here’s your month-by-month guide to Botswana’s seasons, wildlife patterns, and what each period means for your safari with Untouched Safaris.

The Two Seasons at a Glance

Green Season / Summer (November – April): Warm, lush, occasional rain. Newborn animals, dramatic skies, fewer tourists. Lower rates.

Dry Season / Winter (May – October): Dry, cooler nights, peak wildlife viewing. The Okavango flood arrives. This is when the Delta is at its most spectacular – and most visited.

Month by Month

January – February: Green Season Peak
Temperatures reach 35°C+. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. The bush is intensely green – almost jungle-like in places. Baby animals are everywhere: impala, zebra, wildebeest. Birding reaches its peak with hundreds of migratory species present. Game viewing is more challenging as animals disperse across the lush landscape, but the scenery is breathtaking and camp rates are at their lowest. Ideal for photography and birding enthusiasts.

March – April: Transition into Autumn
Rains begin to ease. Temperatures moderate slightly. The landscape is still vivid and green. This is a transitional period – a quieter time in camps, ideal for those who want an intimate bush experience without the high-season crowds. Wildlife begins to gather around permanent water sources. Excellent value.

May – June: The Season Turns
The Angolan rains have filtered south and the Okavango begins to flood – typically reaching Botswana’s entrance in April and peaking across the Delta between June and August. Temperatures drop to comfortable daytime lows of 20–25°C with cold nights. The bush thins as vegetation dries, making wildlife increasingly visible. The beginning of peak safari season.

July – August: Peak Season – Prime Wildlife Viewing
This is Botswana at its most spectacular. The Okavango is fully flooded – water channels are navigable by mokoro and boat, islands are surrounded by crystal-clear water, and wildlife is intensely concentrated. Predator activity is high as prey animals cluster near water. Lions, leopards, wild dogs and cheetahs are regularly seen. Temperatures are perfect: warm days (25°C), cold nights (5–8°C). This is the most sought-after time to visit – camps are full and prices reflect it.

September – October: End of Dry Season
September is arguably the single best month for pure game viewing. The flood begins to recede, concentrating wildlife even further. Elephants, buffalo, lion and leopard crowd around permanent waterholes. Hot days (up to 38°C) bring animals out early and late. The landscape is golden and dramatic. October is the hottest month – not ideal for all travellers, but extraordinary for those who want maximum wildlife density before the rains break.

November – December: The Rains Return
The first rains usually arrive in November, transforming the dusty savanna into something vivid and alive. Migratory birds return. Impala fawns appear. Temperatures rise sharply but so does the drama – thunderstorm evenings over the Delta are among the most spectacular natural events in Africa. Fewer visitors, lower rates, and the beginning of the cycle again.

The Okavango Flood: Nature’s Calendar

The single most defining seasonal event in Botswana is the annual flood of the Okavango Delta. Rain falls in Angola’s highlands (January–February), the Okavango River swells, and the water travels slowly south, arriving in Botswana’s permanent Delta around March–April and spreading across the floodplains through June–August. At peak, the Delta triples in size – from roughly 6,000 km² to over 20,000 km². It is one of the world’s great natural phenomena, and the best way to experience it is by mokoro, boat safari, or houseboat.

Where to Go – and When

Moremi Game Reserve & Khwai (year-round, peak June–October)
Home to our O Bona Moremi Safari Lodge, Moremi is one of Africa’s richest wildlife areas. During the dry season, game viewing is exceptional. In the green season, birdlife is extraordinary.

Okavango Delta Houseboat (best May–September)
The flood makes the Delta navigable by houseboat. Our partner fleet at Okavango Houseboats offers an unmatched perspective – drifting through papyrus channels and open floodplains as elephants wade past.

Savuti & Chobe (dry season, July–October)
This is lion and elephant country at its most dramatic. Savuti’s ancient channels attract huge herds during the dry months – one of Africa’s great predator-prey spectacles.

Central Kalahari (green season, December–March)
The Kalahari transforms after rain – gemsbok, springbok and the famous black-maned lions of the desert congregate on golden plains. Our mobile camp, the O Bona Explorer, follows these migrations.

For most travellers, July–October offers the finest all-round safari experience: superb wildlife viewing, perfect flood conditions for water activities, and Botswana’s most dramatic scenery.
